The fact that the three senior members of the John Carroll women's basketball were born the same year that the Blue Streaks last swept Baldwin Wallace in a regular season series only amplifies what was accomplished Wednesday night at the DeCarlo Varsity Center.
Bouncing back from a tough loss at Capital Saturday, John Carroll knocked off first place Baldwin Wallace, 75-72. Coupled with a 62-52 win in Berea back in January, John Carroll completed its first season series sweep since the 1992-93 campaign.
John Carroll led throughout most of the first half. A jumper by
Katlyn Spahar at the 4:26 mark put the Blue Streaks ahead, 29-21.
Baldwin Wallace responded with an 11-0 run to close out the half, however, and took a 32-29 lead into the intermission. JCU was held to just that one Spahar field goal over the final eight minutes of the period.
The timing of the halftime break proved benificial for the Blue Streaks, and showing a renewed resiliency, came out firing int he second half. Scoring 16 of the first 22 minutes of the second half covering the opening five minutes, John Carroll seized control of the game.
Shmoo Pryor's lay-up with 15:10 left to play put John Carroll up, 45-38.
On two occasions, John Carroll increased its lead to 12 points, the last of which was at the 10:16 mark (59-48). The home squad still led by 11 points with 3:57 left in regulation, 69-58, following a pair of
Beth Switzler free throws.
Baldwin Wallace, however, would test the Blue Streaks' resiliency one more time. Buoyed by a pair of three-pointers, the Yellow Jackets uncorked a 12-3 run closed to within two points with 26 seconds remaining in regulation. Following a timeout, Switzler was fouled and split a pair of free throws, making the first but missing the second to make the score 73-70. Baldwin Wallace raced down court, but Shari Mangas was fouled with 15 ticks left. Imitating Switzler's trip to the line, Mangas made the first but missed the second, and Spahar grabbed the rebound.
Fouled with 13 seconds showing on the clock, Spahar calmly made both free throws to push the lead to 75-71.
Any chance Baldwin Wallace had to create late game drama disappeared as 11 seconds went off the clock in an attempt to launch a shot. Audrey Smolik was fouled with 1.7 seconds remaining, and managed to split the free throws to cap the scoring for the night. JCU successfully inbounded the ball and the horn sounded to end the contest.
Switzler had an impressive double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds, as she went 8-14 from the floor and 5-6 from the line. She had eight offensive rebounds among her 15 total.
Spahar added her own doube double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Emily Taylor added 15 points for JCU, which improved to 19-3 overalla nd 12-3 in the OAC.
Smolik had a game-high 22 for Baldwin Wallace, which slipped to 17-5 and 12-3 in OAC play. JCU and Baldwin Wallace are tied for second in the OAC behind front running Ohio Northern, which is 13-2 in league play with three games remaining.
