Lacrosse is listed as a spring sport, but the beginning of the season can be quite winterlike.
Surviving a 14-hour bus ride to Wisconsin through the core of winter storm Neptune on Saturday, the John Carroll men's lacrosse team made its 2015 season debut a successful one. Scoring twice in the final 14 minutes, the Blue Streaks rallied for a 4-3 victory over Concordia University in non-conference action on a frigid Sunday afternoon at Fitting Field in Mequon, Wisconsin.
Concordia (Midwest Lacrosse Conference) and John Carroll (Ohio Athletic Conference) were both picked to finish second in their respective conference preseason polls, and staged a thrilling battle in the 2014 season opener, won by JCU, 9-7. the stage was set for another close contest this year.
Following a scoreless first period, the Blue Streaks got on the board firstr when
Gary Anile (who also scored John Carroll';s first goal in the inaugural game last year) tallied an unassisted point at the 5:36 mark of the second.
Concordia answered with a goal two minutes later by Colin Raley. The score would remain deadlocked at 1-1 heading to intermission.
The Falcons took their first lead with a goal by Shawn Teixeira with 8:23 showing on the third period clock, but less than 90 seconds later, freshman
Ryan Crater struck back to even the score at 2-2.
The score remained knotted entering the fourth quarter, but did not stay that way for long as Teixeira scored again, this time in a man up situation, just 51 seconds into the final period.
Trailing 3-2, JCU would get the equalizer 20 seconds after Concoia's third and final goal.
Declan O'Grady, who tallied 44 goals in 2014, fired in his first of 2015 on an assist from
Collin Rice.
Both teams had their chances down the stretch, but it would be the Blue Streaks that cashed in. Freshman
Logan Calhoun would be the hero, scoring with 3:28 remaining in regulation.
The teams combined for 15 shots in the fourth period. Overall, JCU outshot Concordia, 25-21.
Both keepers were oustanding, with JCU's
Kyle Lake earning his first win, allowing three goals while making nine saves. Thomas Mueller had 11 saves for Concordia.
