Rare Home Setback For Men's Lacrosse In Loss To Wooster

Teams need to capitalize on opportunities, especially man-up opportunities.

The John Carroll University men's lacrosse team could not take advantage of its man-up opportunities and fell to the College of Wooster 11-10 on Saturday afternoon inside Don Shula Stadium.

JCU had two prime opportunities to do damage in the second half. Wooster was assessed two three-minute non-releasable equipment penalties. John Carroll was only able to net one goal between the two misconducts.

The game started high paced with a trio of goals in the first three minutes of the game. Keegan Flinter started the scoring 22 seconds into the contest. Less than two minutes later, Evan Albertson returned the favor with the equalizer. Ryan Kelly quickly put JCU back in front 2-1 with 12:07 remaining in the first period.

Neither team had offensive momentum until the closing seconds of the quarter. Nate Weltman knotted the contest at two with 20 seconds remaining in the frame. The goal would spark a three-goal run for Wooster who opened a 4-2 lead with 9:48 remaining in the half.

JCU immediately countered with a pair of goals to send the contest into the half tied at four. DeClan O'Grady had a hand in both goals scoring the first and finding Stephen Leous on the second.

Wooster appeared to be running away with four unanswered goals to start the second half. The last, from Tom Herold made the contest a 8-4 affair.

Back came the Blue Streaks.

Logan Calhoun, the hero in the opener, sparked the Blue Streak rally. The freshman rattled home his second goal of the year with 2:47 left in the third. The goal sparked a three-goal onslaught to close the goal cutting Wooster's lead to 8-7.

JCU tied the game at 10 with 2:44 remaining in the contest. O'Grady netted the equalizer for his third goal of the contest. Wooster's Sam Kuhn would net the game-winner with 1:55 remaining.

Kyle Patterson would win the ensuing faceoff on a violation. The Blue Streaks would earn a 30-second extra man opportunity but could not find the back of the net. Gray Anile's potential game-tying shot was turned away by Wooster's Ben Grombala with just over one minute remaining.

In addition to a team-best three goals, O'Grady added two assists on the day. Kyle Lake finished with 11 saves in net.

John Carroll returns to action with a 1 p.m. neutral site game against Randolph-Macon on Saturday, March 7. The game will be played at Loyola-Blakefield High School in Towson, Md.
