Being successful on your home floor will lead to a strong regular season.
The John Carroll University women's basketball team beat Muskingum University by a score of 71-56 on Sunday afternoon inside the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. The win gave JCU its 22nd win this season, tying for the most all-time (22 wins in 2013-14 season).
The Blue Streaks final regular season home record ends at a perfect 12-0. The last time this program was able to achieve this was way back in 1976-77, when John Carroll went 4-0 at home in a much shorter 12-game season.
After trailing 8-2 in the first three minutes, John Carroll went on a 5-0 run thanks to a layup from
Daniella Rice and a deep three pointer from
Emily Taylor. The original six point lead was Muskingum's largest of the contest.
John Carroll began to separate itself from the Fighting Muskies toward the eight minute mark of the first half when
Erin Mog drove to the hoop for a pair of layups and the sharp-shooting Taylor swished another corner three ball. The two players controlled the JCU backcourt with eight and six points respectively in the opening half.
Twenty minutes had passed and the strong defensive effort of the Muskies held John Carroll to a slim 36-29 halftime lead. There were 19 personal fouls and 18 turnovers between the OAC counterparts. Additionally, the Blue Streaks shot 40 percent from three point range, nine percent above their season average in the first half.
Muskingum would come out of the locker room with energy as Alexandra Carson and Taylor Maurer scored a pair of threes to tie the game and force a JCU timeout with 17:36 left to play. Maurer made three of her eight three point field goal attempts on the afternoon.
John Carroll would strike back as
Beth Switzler hit a pair of free throws and
Katlyn Spahar deposited a wide open layup to give the Blue Streaks a 56-49 lead with 6:29 remaining. The scoring was part of a mini 5-0 run and forced Muskingum to use a timeout.
The final six minutes were the finishing touches on an undefeated and historic regular season for JCU. Not only did the Blue Streaks hold on to the lead, but they reached their first double digit margin of the game with a Switzler put-back layup with 1:15 left. A transition layup from Spahar followed to give the Blue Streaks a 67-55 lead, and the home squad cruised from there.
Leading the way for John Carroll was Spahar with 24 points and 10 rebounds and Switzler with 14 points and 20 rebounds (career high). The 20 rebounds were the most by a Blue Streaks since Caitlin Hubach ripped down 20 boards against Thiel on November 18, 2005. The 20 rebounds was three off Cindy Shumaker's school record of 23 set back in 1992.
As a team, JCU outrebounded Muskingum 57-39, including 22 offensive rebounds on the afternoon.
Seniors Switzler, Taylor  and
Meghan Weber were honored before the game for their final regular season home game. With Weber out due to injury, Switzler and Taylor will look to carry the Blue Streak roster to a deep playoff run.
The Blue Streaks head into postseason play with plenty of momentum thanks to four consecutive wins down the stretch. The OAC Tournament begins on February 23 and will conclude with the championship on February 28. JCU will have the number two seed in the tournament, and have a bye to the semifnal round, which will be played February 26 at the DeCarlo Varsity Center at either 6:00 or 7:30 p.m. The opponent will be determined after first round and quarterfinal round play has concluded.
