Chance For Sweep Comes Up Two Runs Shy As JCU Softball Splits With Hiram

The bid by the Blue Streaks to sweep Hiram came up two runs shy Tuesday afternoon at Bracken Field.

And the ducks were definitely on the pond.

As it worked out, John Carroll won game one by a 5-2 count and fell in the nightcap 7-5.

Two days after dropping a doubleheader to #8 ranked Trine Sunday, the Blue Streaks were looking for a bounce back and got it in the opener. It took a few innings to get it rolling, however, as the visiting Terriers -- coached by former JCU assistant Jackie Mangola -- kept the score tight.

In fact, Hiram held a 1-0 lead after a home run in the the top of the first. Carly Simecek, however, responded with a two RBI hit in the bottom fo the frame.

The score was tied 2-2 entering the fourth when Victoria Eder came through in a big way. Her single down the right field line plated a pair of runs to give JCU a 4-2 lead it would not relinquish.

Eder later scored in the fifth on a single by Lauren Cianciolo for the final tally of the contest.

Rachel Byrnes picked up her sixth win of the year with a solid seven inning effort in which she allowed two runs on six hits. Byrnes struck out nine while walking just two.

The Blue Streaks were in rally mode for the entirety of game two. At one point, JCU trailed the Terriers 7-2 before making a spirited rally. In the fourth inning, a double steal by Taylor Tercek and Mikki Vance in which Vance stole home scored one run, while Ashley Unrue and CIanciolo drove in single runs to pull John Carroll to within two runs at 7-5.

John Carroll could not get closer, however. The last rally ended with two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, as JCU stranded four runners over the final four innings.

The Blue Streaks are now 10-6 on the year.
