John Carroll used six goals in the opening period of play to produce a wire-to-wire 18-9 victory Saturday evening over Olivet College in a non-conference matchup staged at Don Shula Stadium.
The Blue Streaks had four different freshman open the game with goals as JCU raced out to a 4-0 lead. Olivet twice closed to within two goals in the opening half and once again in the third period but JCU was never threatened down the stretch in posting its fourth consecutive win after a 1-3 start to the season.
The winning streak comes at an opportune time for John Carroll, which begins Ohio Athletic Conference play next Saturday at defending league regular season and tournament champion Otterbein University.
Collin Rice,
Casey Green,
MacGregor Roberts and
Logan Calhoun all tallied goals in the opening five minutes of the first period as the Blue Streaks seemed posied to blow out the visiting Comets. Shane Prunty stooped the onslaught with Olivet's first goal at the 6:48 mark, but sophomores
Declan O'Grady and
Gary Anile kept the pressure on with a goal each. John Carroll held a 6-1 lead after the first 15 minutes.
The Comets chipped away at the Blue Streak lead, scoring three unanswered goals in the second period to pull to within 6-4. It was still a two goal game at 7-5 when Rice and Calhoun both found the back of the net to push John Carroll's advantage to 9-5 at the halftime intermission.
Keegan Flinter opened the second half with his first goal of the game to put the JCU lead at 10-5 with 13:10 to play in the third.
The home team then lost its groove on offense, going over 16 minutes without a goal. That allowed the Comtes to climb to within 10-8, scoring three goals late in the third period to put drama back into the proceedings.
Anile started swinging the momentum back to the Blue & Gold side, as he broke the scoring drought with his second goal of the game at the 11:44 mark.
Ryan Crater then followed 55 seconds later off an assist by
Casey Green, and then Rice flung in his third goal of the day just ten seconds after the ensuing faceoff on a pass from
Andrew Rao. The three goals in a span of 65 seconds gave the Blue Streaks a 13-8 cushion.
Defenseman
Dan Biron provided an exclamation point with a coast-to-coast run that resulted in a goal to gave John Carroll a 14-8 advantage.
O'Grady added a goals at the 5:14 mark, the 4:26 mark and the 1:43 mark, while Rice scored with under three minutes to play to cap the JCU offensive output.
James Collins got Olivet its lone goal of the fourth period at the 3:31 mark to stop John Carroll's run of six unanswered goals.
JCU doubled up Olivet in goals and shots (52-26), and
Kyle Patterson helped the Blue Streaks win 23 of a possible 30 faceoffs.
The Blue Streaks are now 5-3, while the loss drops Olivet's record to 2-6.
