Doring Soars On Senior Day With Three-Hitter As Baseball Splits With Marietta

Drew Doring had a senior day to remember.

The right-hander fired a three-hit complete game with eight strikeouts to help John Carroll split with Marietta on Saturday afternoon at Schweickert Field in University Hts., Ohio.

With the win, Doring improved to 9-0 to tie the single-season school record for wins. He joins John O'Rourke (1998) and BJ Brown (2001).

"I've had some really good pitchers in my 16 years that have put together some really good seasons," said head coach Marc Thibeault. "What he's doing right now is pretty special. With his performance today, it puts him in one of the best categories in what I've seen so far since I've been involved with the program in 21 years. That was completely outstanding."

Marietta took the first game 5-0. John Carroll used a late triple and two-out single to pull ahead and take the second game of the twin bill 2-1.

John Carroll is 22-11, 11-5 OAC with the split while Marietta is 20-15, 10-6 OAC.

Game 1
Marietta 5, John Carroll 0

John Carroll had numerous chances but could not string anything together as Marietta took the first game 5-0.

Marietta jumped on the board in the top of the first. The Etta Express did all of the damage with two outs. Ryan Hanahan shot a single up the middle. He would come in to score on the next batter as Chris Winpigler drove a triple to right center just out of the outstretched diving glove of Patrick Scholla.

Junior Aaron Lapaglia settled in from there. The right-hander struck out four of the next five batters before running into another jam in the third.

Marietta struck for a pair of runs with two outs. The Pioneers received a RBI double from Hanahan and a RBI single from Winpigler.

Marietta added a run in the fifth and the sixth to push the lead to 5-0.

John Carroll escaped further damage with a trio of key defensive plays. The Blue Streaks rolled the 6-4-3 double play in the top of the fourth. In the sixth Rob Cifelli came up with a big throw to save a run. The center fielder nailed Brandon Papp at the plate in the sixth as part of an 8-2 twin killer. Mark Huddle saved a run in the ninth throwing out Mitch Geers at the plate.

John Carroll did have a plethora of base runners having at least one runner reach in eight innings. However the Blue Streaks could not string enough together at the plate to bring in a run.

Lapaglia took the loss falling to 4-1 on the year. The junior allowed three earned runs on 11 hits while striking out seven in seven innings of work. Tyler Ferretti fired two scoreless innings of relief.

Tyler Gentile and Huddle each finished with two hits in the first game.

Game Two
John Carroll 2, Marietta 1

Doring carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. JCU's offense would score the go-ahead run in the seventh to back its ace to the 2-1 win.

Doring struggled with his command in the first walking the first two hitters of the inning. Tim McCoy came in to score on Tyler Packanik's RBI fielder's choice for the Pioneers lone run of the contest.

The Grafton, Wis. native set the Etta Express down in order in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings.

Geers broke through with a one-out single through the left side in the sixth for the Pioneers' first hit of the contest. Doring would respond with his seventh strikeout of the game getting Winpigler on a 1-2 pitch.

Doring ran into another jam in the seventh but his defense responded. Cifelli tracked down a long fly ball from Papp on a dead spring to save a run.

Said Thibeault, "You can't teach speed and that's what he's got. He ran good routes. He did a good job eliminating a situation where it really hurt Marietta's scoring chances with his ability to go get the baseball."

John Carroll took the lead in the home half of the frame. David Crowley legged out a one-out triple to the left field corner. Two batters later James Molnar came through with a two-out single to center to give JCU the lead.

Said Thibeault, "James swung at the first pitch. It was a very hittable pitch and put on a good swing. David got the big triple. Fortunately, we struck out in the previous at bat (when Jacob was up) but James did a nice job with two hits today. It was good to get that lead because today every game was crucial."

Doring ran into trouble in the ninth allowing two Pioneers to reach base. He regrouped by getting pinch hitter Joey Begany to chase a pitch in the dirt.

John Carroll is slated to return to action on Wednesday, April 29. JCU and CWRU will resume their seven-inning game at 2 p.m. CWRU leads 6-5 in the top of the seventh inning. The game was suspended due to darkness back on April 6. After the resumption wraps up the two teams are set to play a nine-inning twin bill.
