Playing an aggressive early season schedule panned out this evening in Hiram, Ohio, as the John Carroll women's soccer team used a balanced attack to down the host Terriers, 3-1, in a non-conference clash.
Facing the likes of three nationally ranked teams in the first five matches left JCU with an 0-4-1 slate, but the Blue Streaks seized upon an opprtunity to break through into the win column against a program it has enjoyed a great deal of success against in the past, winning 15 of the previous 17 meetings.
Lexie Keller started the scoring for John Carroll when she headed a shot in from a feed by
Acadia Palocko in the 14th minute. It was Keller's first collegiate goal.
JCU then boosted its advantage to 2-0 when another freshman,
Mollie Zoul, scored her first goal as a Blue Streak at the 40:44 mark. Fellow rookie
Bailey Fischer was creditted with the assist.
In stunning fashion, Hiram would slice the deficit in half 28 seconds later when Alison Crowell connected on a blast from the right side. The score was 2-1 after the opening period.
The teams remained a goal apart for most of the second half until Blue Streak sophomore
Justina Fortson finished off a pass from freshman
Haley Vinborg to ice the match in the 79th minute.
John Carroll outshot Hiram, 22-7, to move to 1-4-1 on the year.
Rhianna Guarnera made two saves for her first career victory in goal.
