Box Score The John Carroll women's soccer team played another close game on Sunday, but came up just short against the defending national champions.
Lynchburg (2-0) scored on a late penalty kick to top the Blue Streaks, 2-1, in JCU's second and final game in the Roanoke Invitational in Salem, Va.
Freshman Bailey Fischer got the scoring started for John Carroll (0-2-1) in the 18th minute, when she cashed in the rebound off her initial breakaway shot. The forward has already scored three times in her first three collegiate appearances.
In the 42nd minute, a volley from Mary Beier off a blocked shot put the Hornets on the board.
The score remained deadlocked until the Blue Streaks were whistled for a foul in the 83rd minute. Marina Clark's penalty kick proved to be the game winner, as late chances from JCU were turned away.
Lynchburg was ranked #1 in the NSCAA preseason poll.
The Blue Streaks were outshot, 23-4, in the game. Rhianna Guarnera turned away 11 shots on goal in the contest.
After the contest, Fischer and seniors Sarah Ruckstahl and Danielle Sharbaugh were named to the All-Tournament team.
