Women's Basketball Rallies For Overtime Road Win

Down by 17 on the road, things looked bleak for the John Carroll women's basketball team. Once again, JCU used all 40 minutes (and then some) to pull off another comeback victory.

Katlyn Spahar scored nine of the final 13 JCU points in regulation as the Blue Streaks rallied for a 77-76 overtime victory over the Wilmington Fightin' Quakers.

Spahar had 36 points as JCU rallied from a double-digit deficit for the third time in four games.

JCU improves to 10-7 and 5-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Wilmington drops to 6-11, and 3-7 in conference play.

In the first four minutes of the game, Wilmington went on a 10-0 run which was aided by three JCU turnovers and only four shot attempts. Wilmington's Mackenzie Campbell lead the charge with four points early on.

Bri Pettenger broke the seal by netting a three-ball at the 5:09 mark of the quarter. This sparked an 8-0 John Carroll run. Defense was the calling card as the Streaks held Wilmington to four points in the final four minutes of the quarter.

Another slow start hindered the Blue Streaks in the second quarter. Wilmington took the lead with 6:04 left in the quarter and never looked back. The period would end with Wilmington going on a 14-2 run. Jefferson hit back to back three pointers to open up a 13 point lead.

In the quarter, John Carroll was 3-16 from the floor. The period was dominated by Wilmington as they took a controlling 36-22 lead into half.

John Carroll began to show life in the third quarter behind the hot hand of Katie Battaglia. Wilmington extended the lead to 16 with six minutes left. Battaglia drilled back to back three pointers to cut the deficit to six points.

The Quakers fought back with a Courtney Hillis three to extend the lead to 11 points and the quarter ended with John Carroll trailing by 10, 50-40.

John Carroll came alive in the fourth quarter, using a 13-2 run to take a 63-61 lead. On that run, Kaitlyn Spahar had nine of the 13 points. She made seven free throws and her final one tied the game up. The teams traded leads but the game was headed into overtime.

In overtime, JCU recorded seven of the first nine points scored in overtime. Wilmington rallied back, but JCU closed out another comeback victory.

Up next for the Blue Streaks is a 7:30 p.m. matchup on Wednesday with Heidelberg at the DeCarlo Center.
