On a Saturday road trip to New Concord, the John Carroll men's basketball team had a chance to make history.
Once again, they delivered.
Doug Caputo scored 20 points as #7 John Carroll earned a hard-fought road victory, 97-91, over Muskingum at the Muskingum Recreation Center.
The Blue Streaks are now 13-0, which ties the program record for consecutive wins to start a season. Muskingum falls to 3-10, and 0-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
John Cirillo had 18 points for the Blue and Gold, adding seven rebounds.
David Linane scored 17 and dished out six assists.
Derik Young drilled two three-pointers for JCU off the bench. The Blue Streaks shot 43.0 percent from the floor in the contest.
Muskingum did not make it easy for JCU, as the home squad drilled 17 three-pointers in the contest. Jarrell Marsh scored 34 points and added six rebounds for the Muskies.
MU came out firing, taking a 17-8 lead just six minutes into the game. JCU would trim the lead, but a Joshua Keyes three-pointer in the final 1:30 slowed the momentum. The Fighting Muskies led, 40-39, at the half; it was just the second time the men's squad has trailed at intermission.
In the first half, MU shot 38.5 percent, while JCU was able to muster a 34.2 percent shooting clip.
At the 17:30 mark of the second half, John Carroll took the lead for the first time off a
Ryan Farragher jumper. JCU struggled to extend the lead beyond five, as Muskingum answered on many possessions.
With six minutes to play, a Jalen Paige three-pointer gave Muskingum the lead, 78-75. Less than two minutes later, a Caputo layup gave JCU the lead for good. Free throws down the stretch clinched the 97-91 victory.
The nation's top rebounding squad bested the Muskies on the boards, 51-40.
John Carroll travels to Otterbein for a 7:30 p.m. tip off on Wednesday evening. A win would give them the best start in program history. Â
