Volleyball Senior Day Ends With Seniors In Command

The 2016 John Carroll University volleyball senior class entered their final regular season home match with 73 wins to their credit over their four years as Blue Streaks. On Senior day, the group of Alexa Webber, Leah Switalski, Katie Cosker, Maddie McDowell, Natalie May, and Kit O'Shaughnessy would add another win to their already impressive class resume.

Muskingum would be the adversary for John Carroll in JCU's final home match, and provide an impressive test for the Blue Streaks. With both squads already locked into position as far as the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament is concerned, today's match was about establishing momentum. Both teams brought that spirit into the match.

The first set lived up to the hype, as the teams traded point for point, and neither team leading the set by more than two points at a time. John Carroll powered its way to a first set 25-23 victory due to a clinching kill by senior Leah Switalski.

The Fightin Muskies' would prevail in the second set, using a late burst to pull away. Following the theme of close play, the score would end up at 25-20.

John Carroll would storm back in the third set to take back the lead in the match. Once more, the score was close, as the Blue Streaks would only prevail by a score of 25-23. JCU trailed 23-21 but the Blue Streaks would rattle off the final four points to take a two sets to one lead. Seniors Maddie McDowell and Alexa Webber contributed seven kills during the set.

The Blue Streaks would manage to put the match away in the fourth set. With a final score of 25-13, the final set would be the only lopsided frame of the day. John Carroll would get out to an early 10-3 lead, and would not let the score get any closer than six points from there.

Switalski, Webber, and McDowell lead the Blue Streaks in points, combining for total of 45.5. Seniors Katie Cosker and Natalie May would contribute a combined 22 digs on the day, while Kit O'Shaughnessy ended the day with 39 assists and seven kills herself.

John Carroll improves to an overall record of 16-11 with an OAC record of 6-3. Muskingum falls to 15-13 on the season and an OAC record of 3-6.

The Blue Streaks will host the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday to begin the OAC tournament at 7 pm for a quarterfinal round match.
