Blue Streaks Get Taste Of NCAA Postseason Play In Tough Loss At Lynchburg

For the first time since 2007, John Carroll University made an appearance in the NCAA tournament, back then the Blue Streaks defeated Calvin College, 1-0, today was not the same result as Lynchburg College defeated the Blue and Gold 4-2.

After winning the Ohio Athletic Conference championship game the Blue Streaks traveled just a little over seven hours to Lynchburg, Va. to take on the host Lynchburg College.

This is the first postseason experience for any member of JCU, outside of head coach Hector Marinaro and assistant coach Dejan Mladenovic.

Nerves were noticeable as Lynchburg came out of the gates ready to go. Nine minutes into the match the Hornets connected on a corner kick, as freshman Jack Ashby found Clay Van Gieson on a header to give Lynchburg a 1-0 lead.

As time went on JCU was able to calm down,in the 34th sophomore substitute Chad Kanakkanatt received a ball from midfielder Jesse Marinaro, Kanakkanatt made a move past a Hornet defender and buried a shot from 20 yards out tying the game at 1-1 heading into the half.

The second half was all Hornets, three minutes in Fredy Flores dribbled the ball down the far sideline and crossed the ball to Ben Grossfuss in the middle of the box and was able to beat Liam McIntosh to put the Lynchburg up 2-1.

Lynchburg connected on another set piece four minutes later, this time on a throw in. Austin Kues threw the ball into the box and found the head of Flores to give Lynchburg a 3-1 lead.

In the 75th minute Ryan Mayolo found Adam Reynolds for the final goal for Lynchburg this time putting the Hornets up 4-1 with 15 minutes remaining in the match.

With time winding down a loose ball in the box found Marinaro and he was able to beat goalkeeper Dylan McLaurin making the final score 4-2.

This was the final match for seniors Michael Melfi, Myles Taylor, Tim Delaney, Justin Miller and Kirk Ring. The senior class has been a part of 58 wins in their four years at JCU.
