After a tight first half, John Carroll women's basketball had a chance to come back in the final minutes of Tuesday's contest.
In the end, it was La Roche that would pull away, 76-68, in a non-conference matchup at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
Shmoo Pryor led John Carroll with 18 points on the night.
Katlyn Spahar has 15 points and four assists.
Kahrin Spear had six points and four assists off the bench.
Anne Principe contributed eight points of her own in 16 minutes.
The Cleveland native Sabrina McLin led all scorers with 27 points, eight rebounds, and six steals, while Darrian Johnson added 16 points.
In the first quarter John Carroll forced the issue, causing five turnovers. The biggest turnover came with two seconds remaining when Johnson was called for traveling, on the ensuing inbound pass Spear found
Camille Adelman for an easy two points, closing the quarter out with the Redhawks leading, 19-18.
As the second quarter began, both teams were struggling to score the ball, but La Roche was starting to gain momentum with a 5-0 run that would end after an and-one layup from
Shmoo Pryor. Principe stepped up to the line and buried a pair of free throws to make the score 35-34 in favor of the Redhawks heading into the half.
La Roche came out of the locker room with momentum, starting the half on a 13-4 run, which forced a
Kelly Morrone timeout with 4:23 remaining in the quarter. The Redhawks were able to outscore the Blue Streaks 22-15 in the third quarter.
JCU was trailing 59-49 with eight minutes to go, but Pryor scored five unanswered points forcing a Redhawk timeout with 7:19 remaining, making the score 59-54.
Following the timeout, Pryor intercepted a pass from Johnson and went coast-to-coast converting on another layup cutting the deficit to three. McLin responded on the following possession, making a three-pointer to extend the lead to six.
In the fourth quarter, JCU was able to cut the deficit to four multiple times, but could never get any closer.
John Carroll will play Sunday at Case Western Reserve University. The teams will tip off at 2:00 p.m.
