John Carroll women's basketball traveled to Puerto Rico this week for their first international action in over two decades.
In their first matchup, the Blue Streaks dropped a 63-39 decision to Messiah College on Tuesday morning in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
JCU (3-6, 2-3 OAC) falls for the second consecutive game. Messiah (11-0) swept their stint in Puerto Rico, taking their first game on Sunday. The Falcons came into the game defeating opponents by an average of 26.9 points per game. JCU's defense held Messiah below its season average of 80.1 points per game.
Chelbi Graham led the way for John Carroll with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Shmoo Pryor provided 10 points of her own, adding six rebounds and two assists.
Madi Steiner also provided seven rebounds and six points from her starting role.
Gillian Glackin had a game-high 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Alecia Rohwer added 12 and eight rebounds for the Falcons.
As a team, the Blue and Gold shot 23.0 percent from the floor, compared to 44.3 percent for the Falcons. The team did out-rebound Messiah, 45-41.
John Carroll trailed Messiah, 17-11 after the first quarter. The Falcons extended their lead to 30-22 at the half, with both teams combining for a 2-for-14 clip from beyond-the-arc. In total, the teams shot 3-for-31 from three-point range.
In the third quarter, JCU hung close by a score of 40-29. The Falcons used the fourth quarter to create space, finishing on a 23-10 run to end the game.
