Blue Streaks Still Searching For A Way Past The Yellow Jackets

Solving their Yellow Jacket issues may take some more time for the Blue Streaks women's basketball team.

On Wednesday night, John Carroll traveled to Baldwin-Wallace to take on the Yellow Jackets in the hopes of snapping their three-game skid -- the longest in the three-year tenure of head coach Kelly Morrone.

Despite recovering from a rough beginning, John Carroll ultimately fell by a 73-65 score at Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

JCU has now dropped three in a row against Baldwin Wallace after sweeping the regular season series last year for the first time in two decades

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring with a three ball by Katie Smith on the first possession, and raced out to an 11-2 lead. But JCU weathered the storm and closed the period on a 17-6 run, capped by a Shmoo Pryor lay-up with 45 ticks left that gave the visitors a 19-17 lead after one quarter of play.

John Carroll enjoyed its largest lead of the contest with just under six minutes remaining in the opening half. Katlyn Spahar's jumper put the Blue Streaks ahead, 27-21.

The back-and-forth nature of the first half continued, however. This time, it was BW closing the quarter on a 14-5 run to take a 35-32 lead at the break.

While the first half of the game had numerous momentum swings, the second half was completely different. John Carroll briefly led 40-37, early in the third quarter, but Baldwin-Wallace responded with a 9-0 run and never trailed again.

The Yellow Jackets managed to push the lead out to ten points early int he fourth, after which John Carroll could get no closer than a six-point margin.

Spahar led both teams in points scored with 26 as John Carroll fell to 11-11 overall and 6-9 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. For Baldwin Wallace, which moved to 14-8 and 10-5 in the OAC, Smith was one of four players in double figures with 14.

The Blue Streaks return home Saturday, February 13, to face Marietta College.  Tip-off at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center is set for 3:00pm.
