Blue Streaks Drop Regular Season Home Finale To Mount Union

Entering their final regular season home game, the John Carroll women's basketball team had a chance to clinch a home tournament game.

It will now take a win in the final regular season game to clinch another contest in the DeCarlo Center.

Mount Union made ten 3-pointers and defeated the Blue Streaks, 72-46, on Wednesday evening.

The Blue Streaks fall to 12-12 on the year and 7-10 in the OAC. Mount Union improves to 18-6 overall with a 12-5 OAC record.

JCU is sixth in the OAC with one game to play. A win against Muskingum will clinch a home tournament game on Monday.

John Carroll was led in scoring by junior Katlyn Spahar who had 12 points and in rebounding by sophomore Sarah Cairnie with 6 boards.

The Purple Raiders got off to a quick start thanks to strong shooting and six offensive rebounds in the first quarter. Three of those came at the hands of senior Abby Wemhoff. It was a different start for the Blue Streaks, as the home squad had trouble finishing offensive possessions. JCU found themselves trailing 23-7 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Purple Raiders continued to score, this time in the post. The Blue Streaks found themselves with a 21-point deficit to overcome in the second half with the score at 37-16.

Both squads could not get much going offensively after the half. They combined for just eight points in the first 6:35 of the third quarter. Then the Purple Raiders struck, scoring on five of their next six possessions in a 2:29 stretch.

Back-to-back-to-back 3-point shots put the Purple Raiders up, 55-24. The third quarter ended with John Carroll trailing, 57-28.

John Carroll managed to have their best quarter at the end of the game. The Blue Streaks outscored the Purple Raiders in the final quarter by three, but UMU prevailed, 72-46.

The Blue Streaks will next play on Saturday as they hit the road to take on Muskingum. The OAC battle will be played at 3:00 p.m.
