In late February in the Ohio Athletic Conference, it is a "play for tomorrow" scenario.
Â
The John Carroll University women's basketball team fell to the visiting Wilmington College Fightin' Quakers on Monday evening, 67-57, bringing the 2015-16 season to a close.
Â
With the win in the first round of the 2016 OAC Tournament, Wilmington will travel to Bexley, Ohio tomorrow night to take on No. 3 seed Capital University, in a quarterfinal matchup.
Â
The Blue Streaks finish the season with a 13-13 overall record.
Â
Freshman Mackenzie Campbell led the Quakers, accumulating a game-high 25 points while shooting 10-of-15 from the floor. Thirteen of Campbell's points came in the second half alone, as Wilmington outscored JCU, 46-34, in the third and fourth quarters.
Â
Junior guard
Katlyn Spahar and sophomore guard
Shmoo Pryor led the Blue and Gold. The two Blue Streaks scored 16 total points apiece and Spahar notched a double-double with 10 rebounds.
Sarah Cairnie also had ten rebounds as JCU could not catch Wilmington for a third time after sweeping the regular season series.
Â
Both teams started off slowly, with Wilmington holding a lead at the end of the first quarter, 10-6. The Blue Streaks came roaring back though in the second sequence, rolling to a 10-4 run. JCU led heading into the intermission, 23-21. The Blue and Gold relied on Pryor's eight points and sophomore Cairnie's eight rebounds  in the first half, while JCU gained 17 points in the second quarter alone.
Campbell's strong offensive efforts kept the Fightin' Quakers alive in the opening saga. Campbell accumulated 12 of Wilmington's 21 first half points in 18 minutes of work.
Â
Wilmington fought JCU's halftime momentum, rumbling to 15-2 run to start off the second half. Campbell's seven points and junior Brittaney Jefferson's eight third quarter tallies pushed Wilmington to outscore JCU 25-18 in the quarter. The Quakers managed to exceed their first half points in that third quarter alone. Wilmington added 21 points in the final quarter of play, as the duo of Campbell and Jefferson combined for 11 points. Shooting 15-of-17 (88.2 percent) from the free-throw line also aided Wilmington's efforts.
Â
Spahar's nine fourth-quarter points kept the Blue Streaks in reach, but the late push by Jefferson and Campbell propelled the Fightin' Quakers into the OAC Tournament quarterfinals.
The Blue Streaks, meanwhile, will look to the hope for next season, which shows promise given there are no seniors graduating from this young squad.Â
