After rain cancelled the first series for John Carroll baseball, Opening Day shifted over 750 miles south to Auburndale, Fla.
On a sunny Sunday afternoon, the Blue Streaks split their opener with Concordia-Moorhead, 4-3, 4-3 at Lake Myrtle Park.
GAME ONE
Late innings heroics were in order in game one, as the Blue Streaks scored three unanswered runs to top the Cobbers, 4-3 in seven innings.
Dominic Mittiga and
Patrick Scholla each recorded an RBI double in the contest.
On the mound,
Aaron Lapaglia (1-0) struck out ten in a complete game effort. The senior gave up one earned run on six hits. Cobbers starter Kyle Connelly allowed two runs on six hits in five innings. He struck out five JCU batters.
Concordia kicked off the scoring in the third inning. With runners on first and second and no outs, Phil Kuball laced a double to left field, driving in one. A groundout to first by Aaron Green notched a second run.
The Cobbers held the 2-0 lead until Mittiga's RBI double to left center in the fourth inning got the Blue Streaks on the board, and
Rob Cifelli drove in
Jacob Schriner with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
The sixth inning broke things open for the Blue Streaks. Sam Mattson (0-1) struck out
Tyler Gentile and the Cobbers caught
James Molnar stealing, but JCU mounted a two-out rally.
Mittiga doubled to center field and Scholla drove him home on a double of his own. Schriner reached first and advanced to second on an error; that mistake let Scholla run home for the go-ahead score.
Lapaglia struck out the first two batters swinging before allowing a single in the seventh. The short rally and the game ended with a fly out to right field.
Mittiga wen 2-for-3 with the two doubles.
John Bondi, Cifelli,
David Crowley,
Chris LaLiberte, Scholla and Schriner all had hits for JCU.
GAME TWO
A four-run fourth doomed the Blue Streaks in a 4-3 loss to the Cobbers in the second game of the doubleheader.

JCU opened the scoring.
Rob Cifelli was picked off at first base, and Molnar scored as Cifelli distracted the fielders.
In the fourth, Chad Johnson gave Concordia the lead for good with a two-RBI double to right field. Two batters later, Turner Storm drove home Johnson and Jordan Domine with a long single.
JCU attempted a late game rally again, but could not complete the comeback. A passed ball scored
Patrick Keohane, who had just reached base with a hit on the first collegiate pitch he faced.
In the seventh, Molnar doubled to left center, scoring Scholla, but Hallock ended the game with three straight outs to stop JCU.
