It has been nearly a decade since the Cleveland Indians packed up their Florida operations and headed west.
On Monday morning, a Cleveland baseball team returned to Winter Haven and routed the #20 team in Division III baseball.
Jake Servidio tossed seven innings of two-hit ball as the John Carroll defeated Wartburg, 11-0, in seven innings at Chain of Lakes Park Stadium.
Servidio (1-0) got the win, while Taylor Gilson (0-1) takes the loss. JCU improves to 2-1 on the season. Wartburg drops to 0-1. The sophomore struck out three Knights and walked no batters.
The Blue Streaks were active at the plate, recording 13 hits.
David Crowley was 3-for-4 with a three RBI triple.
Patrick Scholla went 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBI.
Rob Cifelli and
Jacob Schriner each had two RBI in the victory.
"It's important that we're competing in this situation," head coach
Marc Thibeault said after the win. "That's why we're here. That's a quality opponent right there and the game could have gone the other way if we didn't execute."
"Fortunately we did today, and we came out on the plus side. It's about getting better, and better and better, all while racking up wins."
After two scoreless innings, the Blue Streaks got to work. After two quick outs, JCU was given new life on a series of errors.
With Cifelli on first,
Patrick Scholla lofted a ball into right field that was dropped. He advanced to third and
Rob Cifelli scrambled home. Crowley came to the plate and drove home Scholla with a single up the middle.
JCU added another run in the fifth on a Crowley RBI double.
The Blue Streaks staked their claim in the sixth inning. With runners on second and third with one out, Jacob Shriner singled into left center, scoring Mittiga. A
John Bondi single loaded the bases, and Cifelli was hit by a pitch, making it a 5-0 lead.
Gilson exited, and relief pitcher Nadermann immediately surrendered a bases-clearing triple to right center to Scholla. Crowley drove in one final run with a single, and the game was broken open at 9-0. JCU would bat around in the inning.
"We talked yesterday about how we didn't score enough runs in bunches [against Concordia]," Thibeaut remarked. "We talked about changes in approach and they responded really well."
The final two runs came on a Schriner single and Cifelli sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
Wartburg threatened to score in the seventh after an error, wild pitch and single. With runners on first and third, Servidio forced a fielders choice at second base that ended the contest.
"It's always easier pitching with the lead," Servidio said after the game. "It was fun to watch those guys run around the bases."
JCU is back in action on Tuesday with a matchup against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at Lake Myrtle Park at 10:00 a.m.
