In a battle of second year programs, the John Carroll women's lacrosse team came out on top in convincing fashion.
The Blue Streaks defeated the Elmhurst College Bluejays , 21-5, on Saturday afternoon at Don Shula Stadium. Eleven different Blue Streaks scored.
It was the second time in as many years that the Blue Streaks had prevailed over the Bluejays. JCU defeated Elmhurst on Mar. 14, 2015, by a 13-2 count, in Elmhurst, Ill.
Jillian Millard finished the game with four goals and one assist.
Meghan Harte added three goals, and
Grace Curatolo had three goals and four assists.
it was actually the visiting Bluejays who tallied the first goal in the contest, as Phoebe LeRoy found the net with less than two minutes gone off the clock. Sophomore star
Grace Curatolo went to work early and matched LeRoy's goal less than a minute later.
Freshman
Jillian Millard scored back-to-back goals at the 3:00 and 3:40 minute mark to give the Blue Streaks a 3-1 lead.
However, Elmhurst College answered her goals with two of their own by Ellen Brown and LeRoy, knotting the score at 3-3.
Freshman
Alexis Guage scored her first goal of the season to give JCU a 4-3 edge.
LeRoy scored her third goal midway through the opening half to tie up the score one last time, 4-4. From then, an array of Blue Streaks scored, including
Gina Vilsack,
Meghan Harte,
Brooke McQuinn,
Grace Curatolo, and
Jillian Millard. McQuinn scored with eleven seconds left on the clock to put the Blue Streaks up 9-5 going into halftime.
To open up the second half, Harte racked up two more goals within seconds of each other. John Carroll started to run away with the game, with Elmhurst never scoring in the second half.
A total of twelve goals were scored by the Blue and Gold in the second half of play. The Blue Streaks had a 38-11 edge in shots and 37-18 edge in ground balls.
John Carroll will be back in action at Oberlin College on Wednesday, Mar. 16 at 6 p.m.
