Progress Duly Noted As JCU Women's Lacrosse Rolls At Oberlin

What a difference a year makes.

An 11-6 home loss to Oberlin in 2015 was quickly forgotten for the Blue Streaks ahead of the 2016 meeting. Through the performance of seven different goal scorers, the Blue Streaks defeat the Yeowomen, 21-18, on the road Wednesday evening to move to 4-1 on the year.

The 21 goals the Blue Streaks put on Oberlin are the most goals allowed for the Yeowomen in three seasons (21-5 loss to Wittenberg on April 24, 2013).

John Carroll got to work early. After 20 seconds of game time, Jillian Millard ended the scoreless tie with her ninth tally of the season. Alexa L'Insalata, the goaltender for Oberlin, prevented further damage for the hosts. L'Insalata stonewalled a three shot possession from the Blue Streaks, keeping them within reach.

On the ensuing Oberlin possession, Maggie Mullard forced a free position and goal to tie the game, 1-1. Suzanna Doak would add onto the Oberlin lead with a score of her own at the 23:38 minute mark of the first half.

Providing the rebuttal for the Blue Streaks was Millard on her second goal of the game. The scoring play was set up nicely from Meghan Harte, who found Millard cutting in traffic to score. Both teams would trade goals until the contest was knotted at four goals aside.

Harte would then end the deadlock around the 14-minute mark with her ninth goal of the season. The Blue Streaks would go on to add some distance between themselves and the hosts. Grace Curatolo and Alexis Guage combined to open up an 8-4 lead just past the halfway point of the first frame.

After Millard added another score to bring the Blue Streaks lead to 9-5, Oberlin would make a comeback statement. Grace Barlow and Natalie Rauchie scored two goals apiece to tie the game at 9-9 before the end of the half.

Returning to the second half was a Blue Streak team with an offensive agenda.

John Carroll went on a 5-0 run to open the period. At the 26:35 mark, the Blue Streaks led 14-9 after another Harte goal. Oberlin netted a goal to stop the run momentarily, but John Carroll got back to work. Millard scored back-to-back goals less than 30 seconds apart to give JCU a 16-10 lead=.

The Blue and Gold would continue to pour it on to open up an 18-11 lead with 22 minutes to play in regulation.

Oberlin would start to threaten the Blue Streaks in the final minutes of the second frame. Barlow cut the John Carroll lead to just three with under five minutes to play at 20-17. Curatolo would kill the threat of the hosts making a comeback with a free position goal at the 3:15 mark to insure the victory.

Millard was the leading scorer for the Blue Streaks with seven goals -- a new career high for the freshman. Curatolo supplied five goals and four assists while Brooke McQuinn led the way with five ground balls.

Caroline Smith was steady between the pipes for the Blue Streaks, as she racked up six saves.

The win marks the seconds straight victory and second consecutive game where the Blue Streaks scored more than 20 goals.
