It is a lengthy jaunt south and east across the state of Ohio to get from University Heights to Springfield, and the host Wittenberg Tigers made that trip feel even longer for the Johnb Carroll women's lacrosse team.
The Tigers, who are 49-16 over ther past four seasons, scored nine of the first eleven goals today in what became a 17-10 victory in what was Wittenberg's season opener.
John Carroll could take some encouragement in outscoring Wittenberg by a 6-5 count in the second half, but the damage was done early.
Becca Joseph opened the scoring at the 26:48 for the home team, but JCU's
Gina Vilsack answered back less than a minute later.
Over the next 14 minutes, however, it was a Wittenberg explosion as eight of the next nine goals scored were for the "Red & White".
Meghan Harte stopped the run for awhile with back-to-back goals to cut the Tigers' lead to 9-4, but Wittenberg scored the last three goals of the first half and the first three of the second to salt the game away.
Vilsack finished the day with four goals, while Harte,
Grace Curatolo, and
Jillian Millard each tallied two.
Curatlo had three assists for John Carroll, which fell to 1-1.
