After brutal weather conditions cancelled their matchup in 2015, the John Carroll and St. Vincent women's lacrosse teams finally met for the first time in program history.
The Blue Streaks (2-1) won their first home game of the season over the visiting Bearcats (0-4) by a score of 18-13 at Don Shula Stadium. The Blue and Gold did not let the rainy conditions slow them down as
Grace Curatolo and
Gina Vilsack each tallied five goals in the winning effort.
Saint Vincent was meant to be the inaugural opponent for the John Carroll women's lacrosse program on February 21, 2015, but mother nature intervened and the match was never rescheduled. After waiting 54 weeks to play again, the two teams did not disappoint in what was an action packed match.
The Bearcats waited all of 42 seconds to strike first. Despite allowing a goal that quickly, JCU was able to bounce back and score two consecutive goals by Curatolo and Vilsack.
The visitors managed to score of the next five goals in the match to take a 5-3 lead, taking advantage of what became at one point a seven-minute scoring drought suffered by the Blue Streaks. Curatolo started the comeback with a tally at the 17:01 mark of the first half. Shortly thereafter,
Meghan Harte found her way onto the stat sheet for the first time with her third goal on the season. The score was even at five with just under 15 minutes to play in the first half.
Both teams continued to trade goals in the middle portion of the see-saw affair. But just before heading into the intermission, Curatolo and Vilsack both found the net in the final 46 seconds to build an 11-8 lead. Curatolo (5), Vilsack (5), and Harte (1) were responsible for all of the first half goals.
A new name finally reached the scoring column as
Mary Jo Murino netted her first goal of 2016. Harte shortly followed with her second and third scores of the evening to give her two consecutive games with multiple goals. The score now stood at 14-9 in favor of the home team.
The JCU lead continued to grow as the weather worsened thanks to another Murino goal, a pair of scores from freshman
Jillian Millard, and a goal from
Brooke McQuinn. With 10:40 left in regulation, the Blue Streaks held a commanding 18-12 advantage. Only one goal would be recorded the remainder of the contest.
John Carroll held advantages in shots (34-24) and shots on goal (26-18), and also held a slight lead in ground balls (36-31)
The Blue Streaks will stay at home and return to action on Saturday against Elmhurst College at 1 pm.
