After 23 runs against Wilmington yesterday, the Blue Streaks struck again while the iron was hot, but it was only good for a split against Mount Union on Wednesday.
JCU won 6-1 on the back of a stellar effort from
Drew Vargo in game one, but dropped an offense-heavy 10-9 decision in game two.
GAME ONE
Vargo played hero in game one, as he threw nine innings of three-hit ball. It was his first career complete game. He was responsible for five baserunners and just one run.
Vargo (1-4) got an assist from the hitters in the JCU lineup, as the Blue Streaks teed off for 12 hits.
Rob Cifelli,
Tyler Gentile,
Patrick Keohane and
Mike Raschilla each had multi-hit games, with Keohane leading the way with three hits and two RBI.
Scoring started in the bottom of the second with a Mittiga RBI groundout. Mount Union struck back in the third before a fifth inning that was highlighted by a Crowley RBI single and Raschilla RBI double.
Keohane broke it open in the seventh. His two-RBI single gave JCU a 6-1 lead they would not relinquish.
GAME TWO
Nine different pitchers saw the mound for JCU and Mount Union in game two, and it was the Purple Raiders that pulled out the 10-9 victory.
Christopher Hanley (0-1) got the start and allowed four runs in the first inning.
Joseph Franke allowed three in 2 ? innings, before
Steven Virost locked it down for three scoreless innings.
At the plate, JCU enjoyed success again, with three multi-run innings. Crowley was 4-for-5 at the plate, driving in four. He had two RBI singles and an RBI double.
Mount took the 4-0 lead, and led 7-1 at one point. JCU clawed back, using two runs in the fourth and three in the seventh to cut the lead to 7-6.
A three-spot by the Purple Raiders in the seventh made the lead 10-6, but JCU was not done yet. Crowley's single and a wild pitch cut it to 10-9. However, Scott Chase (S, 1) came on and closed the door for a five-out save.
