llinois Wesleyan made the trip from Bloomington, Illinois, to face off against the John Carroll men's lacrosse team for the first time ever on Saturday afternoon at Don Shula Stadium.
The high-octane Titans were not tired from the long voyage, as the Blue Streaks fell at home for the first time this season by an 11-7 score to the Titans. JCU now carries a 4-4 record, while IWU moves to 7-3.
Declan O'Grady,
Gary Anile, and
MacGregor Roberts each contributed two goals.
Although Illinois Wesleyan was on the board first, John Carroll kept it close in the first half. Entering halftime, the score was 3-2 with the Titams ahead by just one goal.
Roberts evened out the score at three with 11:46 remaining in the third quarter. However, IWU scored three consecutive goals. Anile added his two goals during this quarter to keep the Blue Streaks in the game, entering the fourth quarter only trailing 7-5.
In the final stanza, the Blue and Gold fell behind by a 9-5 count and could never again get closer than three goals.
Despite the loss, John Carroll's defense held the Titans -- who came into the game as the highest scoring offense in Division III at 17.44 goals per game -- to their second lowest scoring output of the season. Only Eastern University held Illinois Wesleyan to fewer goals this season (six on March 19).
The Blue Streaks led in shots 35-28 and won exactly half (11-of-22) of the faceoffs.
JCU will travel to Wilmington College to start Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday, April 9th.
