Game Recap: Baseball |

Offense Goes Cold In Monday Baseball Sweep

As the OAC regular season reaches the final stretch, all conference games factor in to postseason seeding. After two losses on Monday evening, the standings tightened a bit for John Carroll baseball.

The Blue Streaks lost both games to the Marietta Pioneers, 7-1, 4-1, in Marietta, Ohio.

JCU (17-18) is still fourth in the OAC, but their lead over Mount Union is now one with two OAC games to play.

GAME ONE

Marietta scored four runs in the final two innings to cap off a 7-1 victory in game one.

David Crowley spoiled the shutout with a home run to right field in the top of the ninth inning. Aaron Lapaglia drops to 4-3 on the year, allowing five runs in seven innings. Mark Pisanello finished the game, allowing two in the eighth. Christian Herstine moves to 8-2, surrenderign the one run on five hits.

Monroe Donnelly and Jacob Schriner each had two hits in game one; Donnelly added a stolen base. Greg Peffley was the leading Pioneers hitter, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBI.

GAME TWO

JCU jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but Marietta scored four unanswered runs to win by a score of 4-1.

Brandon Maddern (6-5) allowed three runs in six innings, while Drew Vargo gave up the fourth in two innings. Marietta pitchers held JCU to just one run on five hits for the second straight game.

Tyler Gentile drove in JCU's lone run on sacrifice fly in the first. Doug Bennett brought home the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth. A Tyler Packanik sacrifice fly in the seventh and Chris Petrucci RBI single in the next inning capped off the scoring.

Crowley improved to 3-for-8 on the day with a two-hit performance. He punched his second extra-base hit with a double. Rob Cifelli was 1-for-3, adding a stolen base. Peffley added another double for Marietta in the win.

Next up for JCU is a Senior Day doubleheader with Capital on Saturday, May 7 at Schweickert Field.
