John Carroll had a rough start to the week with a pair of five set losses to neighborhood rivals, but bounced back nicely by winning three of the four matches it played over the weekend at the Hanover College Invitational in Hanover, Indiana.
JCU swept Anderson University (IN) and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College on Friday, and then Spalding College on Saturday before losing in four to host Hanover in the final match of the two-day tournament.
The Blue Streaks started out with their most convincing single game of the season, blasting Anderson 25-8 in the opening set. They would follow with more competitive battles by scores of 27-25 and 25-16 to complete the sweep.
Julianne McGervey was sensational in the match, lighting up a team-best 11 kills and a .625 hitting percentage.
Kit O'Shaughnessy provided 28 assists and 13 digs. JCU amassed ten service aces, led by four apiece from
Katie Cosker and
Madeline McDowell.
John Carroll then made quick work of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, 25-14 25-15 and 25-20. The Blue Streaks turned in a .341 hitting percentage for the match, with nine different players recording at least two kills. McGervey (9) and
Sydney Slater (8) led the way as JCU collected 29 kills.
Against Spalding on Saturday, John Carroll needed 44 kills and a strong service and serviuce return game to post a 25-17, 25-22, 25-20- victory. McGervey had 12 kills while
Leah Switalski and O'Shaughnessy each had nine.
The Blue Streaks recorded seven aces, with Cosker notching three. Equally impressive was JCU had just two reception errors over the course of the match.
In the final contest of the weekend, the Blue Streaks won the opening frame 26-24 but then dropped the final three to a Hanover club that went 4-0 for the tournament to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Alexa Webber had 15 kills in 31 attempts for a .484 percentage. McDowell had 10 kills and a .375 percentage. O'Shaughnessy had 40 assists to pace the offense.
John Carroll is now 5-5 on the season.
