The John Carroll volleyball team defeated Oberlin College in three sets in their 2016 debut night inside the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
The Blue Streaks swept the Yeowomen 25-15, 25-14, 25-15. They have won five of their last six matches to improve their overall record to 7-5 this season.
It took the Blue Streaks a few serves to get in the groove, but after a couple of Yeowomen errors and a
Kayla Musso service ace, there was no looking back. The Blue and Gold racked up 15 kills in the first set.
Four service aces in a row by
Caitlin Cianciolo was the highlight of the second set. JCU gained a 10-point lead before Oberlin could get a sideout. Cianciolo also led the team with 10 digs.
Fifteen of John Carroll's 25 points came from kills in the third set. Seniors
Kit O'Shaughnessy and
Leah Switalski both contributed nine kills in the match.
Sara Chang led Otterbein College with 19 assists, and Emily Kelkar contributed 16 digs.
Cosker surpassed her 1,300th dig mark in Thursday night's match. She finished the game with eight digs, bringing her career total digs to 1,304. O'Shaughnessy is just four assists behind the second place all-time assist leader, Beth Cooper. After racking up 25 assists, she now sits at 3,264.
"It is a great feeling to get the first home game under our belt, and even win in three. It was awesome to see the team chemistry at work on our home court. I feel this game shows what we are capable of as a team," said Cianciolo.
JCU will travel to Hiram, Ohio on Tuesday, September 20 to take on the Terriers of Hiram College for a 7 pm match.
