Extra Time Not Enough as Blue Streaks Draw with CMU

Historical context can give major meaning for a soccer match. In the case of the John Carroll and Carnegie Mellon University soccer match on Friday, Sept. 23, history proved to be a shining light.

There were just three prior meetings between the two programs ahead of the match up, with CMU being the victor and hosts in all three. Through that three match span, CMU outscored the Blue and Gold, 10-1. But in the first ever meeting in University Heights, John Carroll would add a much needed new chapter to the history books.

Led by a Dre Regrut goal, the Blue Streaks forced an extra-time 1-1 draw with CMU. John Carroll now moves to 3-3-3 on the year with there second draw in as many games.

Blue Streak goalkeeper Rhianna Guarnera was put to the test early and often in the opening minutes of the game. The junior faced four shots within the opening 10 minutes of the game.

The JCU defense, led by Bailey Fischer, Justina Fortson and Regrut aided to holding down the fort and maintaining play in the midfield. After 13 minutes of play, JCU took advantage of a counter attack, pressing the CMU defense. Regrut took the ball in the final third, making a quick move passed her defender, placing the ball beautifully top-shelf over the CMU goalkeeper to give the Blue Streaks the lead.

The goal came as a result of the first attempt on goal from the Blue Streaks. Regrut also adds her fourth goal in as many games.

Guarnera finished the half with a clean sheet, having faced a total of 10 shots.

The second half of action was almost a carbon copy of the first in terms of gameplay.  JCU and Carnegie went back and forth for the first 10 minutes, switching off advantage and moving play to either side of the field.

Regrut had a pair of set piece opportunities that just barely missed the top corners of the Carnegie Mellon pipes.  With 23 minutes playing, the Tartans began their takeover of the second half action.  Guarnera faced 13 shots, making six saves during the final moments of regulation time.

John Carroll nursed their 1-0 lead into the last 10 minutes of the game.

Almost instantaneously, Carnegie Mellon went on a ferocious counterattack.  On the attack, a long ball feel to the feet of Haili Adams, who sped past the tired JCU defenders and put a one timer past the diving Guarnera with 6 minutes remaining in the game.  The strike evened the score a one goal a side, forcing two extra period. This was the third double-overtime game the Blue Streaks played in this season.

No decisive strike could be found from either attacking team in the extra periods. After 20 minutes of extra soccer, the Don Shula Stadium scoreboard struck 0:00 with the score still deadlocked at 1-1.

John Carroll now moves to 3-3-3 on the year and continues a four game streak that does not feature a loss.
