Box Score 2 In order to get off on the right foot when Ohio Athletic Conference play begins on the first day of October, the Blue Streaks needed to exit September with some much-needed momentum.
The quest for that treasure was successful Friday night in Fredonia, New York.
Box Scores: Coming soon
The Blue Streaks entered play this afternoon with a record of 8-8 prior to playing in two matches on Friday night at Dods Hall as part of the Fredonia Blue Devil Women's Volleyball Invitational. The first opponent to face John Carroll was the Rochester Institute of Technology, who came in with a solid overall record of 12-7.
It seemed as though the Blue Streaks would have their hands full, but JCU was more than up to the task as they defeated the Tigers in three sets. Leading the strong John Carroll effort were seniors
Madeline McDowell and
Leah Switalski. McDowell contributed 11 of JCU's 41 kills, and Switalski had eight kills of her own. Junior
Kayla Musso and senior
Katie Cosker also helped the Blue Streak cause, with the pair combining for five service aces.
As for the second game, domination is the word which could summarize the Blue Streak play. Fredonia came into the game with an overall record of 10-6, allowing John Carroll to once again test themselves against a formidable opponent.
The Blue Streaks were off to a strong lead, going up 17-9 in the first set. Sophomore
Julianne McGervey and McDowell headlined the John Carroll offense, as McDowell had a strong kill to score the 17th point and put the Blue Streaks up eight. John Carroll went on to win the first set by a score of 25-12, and did not stop there.
The Blue Devils put up a little bit more of a fight in the second set and traded points with JCU. That is until McGervey came in with a kill that appeared to be a momentum changer and put John Carroll up 18-14. The Blue Devils would only score three more points as the Blue Streaks won going away, 25-17.
SeniorÂ
Alexa Webber, the kills leader of the Blue Streaks, fired up the offense and senior
Natalie May had some strong serves late, including one service ace , that led to a 25-17 John Carroll victory that completed the second sweep of the day.
Senior
Kit O'Shaughnessy contributed 27 assists in the second match and the McGervey finished with six of the 29 kills for John Carroll.
John Carroll takes a 10-8 record into its OAC opener at home Saturday afternoon against Wilmington College. The match is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start
