Persistence Pays Off For JCU Women's Soccer In Home Opener

Power outages, 90 degree temperatures and two overtime sessions -- as it turned out -- were exactly what the doctor ordered for the John Carroll University women's soccer in its home opener of the 2016 season.

Even though the final prognosis was excellent, one might have to question the doctor.

The Blue Streaks dropped the College of Wooster 3-2, thanks to a golden goal in the second overtime period. For the game, JCU led in corner kicks (8-2) and shots (30-8) but needed nearly 108 minutes to finally put away the vistors.

The Wednesday afternoon victory ends the search for the first win and goal of the new season, thanks in part to the decisive touches from strikers Jaclyn Audino and Taylor Newhart. John Carroll now moves to 1-2 on the year.

Offensive pressure started early and often for the Blue Streaks. The squad manufactured several scoring chances within the opening five minutes of the match and dominated midfield play.

The Fighting Scots would find an answer to the pressure puzzle presented from the hosting Blue Streaks. Coming in the 6th minute, midfielder Kathleen Kalafatis took a Krenare Rakoci cross from the right wing off her chest and powered a low shot past John Carroll goalkeeper Rhianna Guarnera. The tally opened scoring on the afternoon and gave the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

Despite JCU's 9-5 advantage in the shot column from the first half, the hosts were held without a tally on the score sheet for the fifth time in as many halves of play this season.

The 1-0 halftime deficit for the Blue Streaks was quickly erased once play resumed. Just 58 seconds into the second stanza, Audino evened the score with a powerful right foot strike to the bottom corner of the frame. Bailey Fischer was credited with the assist in what was the first goal of Audino's collegiate career.

It would not be her last.

John Carroll would take the lead when Taylor Newhart stamped her mark on the match. Andrea Regrut found the streaking Newhart in the box who added the finishing touches on a curling ball into the net. In the 66th minute, the Blue Streaks took a 2-1 lead.

An equalizer would come from Wooster Caroline Drew dropped a perfectly placed ball into the upper corner of frame from just over 25 yards out. The 81st minute goal would even the score sheet and push the affair into overtime.

It would take the better part of the two overtime periods to decide on a victor. In the 118th minute, Audino sped past a defender on the right wing to find time and found space inside the 18-yard box. A powerful strike from the freshman found the left side netting and pushed the Blue Streaks into supremacy.

JCU had six of the seven shots taken in the extra periods.

The Fighting Scots still lead the all-time series, 15-9-1, but it has been a decidedly lopsided series for whoever stands as the home team. The Blue Streaks are now 8-2 against Wooster at Shula Stadium but just 1-13-1 when playing the Scots away from University Heights.

John Carroll will now travel back to Kentucky for a two-game swing against opponents Thomas More College and Hanover College.
