Wrestling Topped In OAC Opener By Ninth-Ranked Yellow Jackets

The John Carroll wrestling team found itself ahead of nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace near the midway point of Friday night's match, but the lead would not hold.

JCU fell in the last six matches as Baldwin Wallace took a 27-11 decision at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in the season's first OAC dual meet.

At 125-pounds, Freshmen Dom Devine would fall in the first match of the day against Chris Doyle, 13-1.

Sophomore Mitch Tikkanen would get out to an early 2-0 lead at 133 pounds thanks to a key takedown, but Baldwin Wallace would fight back to take the lead. Tikkanen would get another takedown in the final moments of the second period to gain the lead once more by a score of 5-3. Tikkanen dominated the final period, winning the bout, 11-3.

The match at 141 pounds would be a tight bout, with neither wrestler gaining more than a three-point lead. Coming down to the final period, Sal Corrao trailed 4-3. The senior would escape to tie the score, and get a 6-4 sudden victory.

John Carroll would also take the decision at 149. Sophomore Jarrad Lasko got out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period. Lasko would not let up in the bout, winning 9-1, and giving JCU an 11-4 lead.

Baldwin Wallace gained momentum back with a pin of Blake Dixon at 157. Tyler Hardtke would have the lead at 165 until late, losing by an 8-6 decision on a last-second reversal. At 174 pounds, freshman Christian Hipsher lost by a 14-4 major decision, and BW took a 17-11 advantage.

Junior Kevin Khoma wrestled for JCU at 184 pounds, but would come up short in a 8-0 major decision.

Mason Litz had a nice takedown early to get out to a 2-1 lead in the first period at 197. In a closely-battled match, Tyler Maclellan would earn a narrow 4-3 win. The fiercely contested heavyweight battle sophomore Russ Porter lose by 8-4.

Up next for the Blue Streaks is another OAC matchup in Ada, OH, as JCU travels to Ohio Northern on Tuesday.
