David Linane Jr. dominated the final two minutes of the contest to help John Carroll men's basketball secure a 102-93 victory over Capital University on Saturday.
Linane hit a pair of threes in the closing moments and forced a turnover to spur on the Blue Streaks. Caleb Cox led all scorers with 30 points and added 11 rebounds to his stat total.
John Carroll had five different players score over double digits, led by the bench duo of
Ryan Berger (23) and
John Cirillo (20).
The Blue Streaks came out of the locker room ready to play, opening the game on an 11-2 run, highlighted by a
Simon Kucharewicz dunk. The Crusaders went on their own run cutting the deficit down to three, but Berger was able to bury a wide open three pointer to put JCU up 19-13.
Cirillo scored five consecutive points for the Blue and Gold, giving them a 27-16 lead with 10:15 left in the half. Capital battled back and trimmed the Blue Streak lead to five after Joey Weingartner made a pair of free throws with 4:20 left in the half.
With the first half winding down, Tony Vuyancih attacked the basket and missed a layup. Cirillo was able to get the rebound and make the tip shot right before the buzzer, giving JCU a 50-38 lead heading into the break.
Cirillo led JCU with 14 points and six rebounds, Berger added 10 points. The Crusaders bench scored 32 of the 38 points in the half.
Capital started the half strong and cut the lead down to as little as six, but
Ryan Berger attacked the basket and finished the layup and drawing the foul and connecting on the free throw, giving JCU a 63-53 lead with 14:07 remaining in the contest.
Dan Auble hit a three pointer in the corner, cutting the John Carroll lead to 87-84. Cirillo made a nice post move on the following possession to end a 15-4 run by the Crusaders.
With 2:21 remaining in the game Capital cut the John Carroll lead to 90-87, but then Linane took the game over. Linane drilled a three-pointer, then stole the ball on the other end of the floor. He quickly sunk another three-pointer, sealing the deal and giving the Blue and Gold a 102-93 victory.
The Blue Streaks improve to 7-5, (4-2 OAC) this season, while the Crusaders drop to 8-5, (3-3 OAC) for the year.
JCU will travel to Westerville, Ohio to take on Otterbein University on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
