Blue Streaks Ride Fourth Quarter Comeback To Chase Down Crusaders

A 17-2 run in the fourth quarter lifted John Carroll women's basketball to a 64-58 lead over Capital on Saturday afternoon.

Shmoo Pryor led all scorers with 19 points and Chelbi Graham chipped in 15 points and added 12 rebounds.

The first quarter was highlighted by a run in which JCU scored 17 of 19 points; Chelbi Graham and Sarah Specher combined for 11 points.

John Carroll played tough defense during the run, as Capital shot 1-of-11 from the field. Emily Ondo ended the Blue Streaks run by connecting on a jump shot, but the Blue and Gold ended the first quarter with a 22-14 lead.

Capital was able to get the deficit down to three with six minutes to go in the half. From there, the two teams would trade baskets. The lead would be within three points until Jasmine Rogers made a layup with one minute left in the half, giving JCU a 35-30 advantage.

Ondo would connect on a buzzer beater at the end of the quarter, but JCU would hold a 35-34 lead heading into the break.

At the break, Pryor led all scorers with 11 points, going 2-for-2 from behind the three point arc, Rogers had five blocks in the half, which doubled her season high of two blocks earlier this year against St. Vincent College.

The Crusaders were able to take control in the third quarter thanks to a 13-0 run over a four minute span. Capital would hold a 49-39 lead. John Carroll would go into the fourth quarter trailing 51-45.

JCU was trailing 56-47 with 6:39 remaining, when the Blue Streaks defense would take over. Capital would be held scoreless until Colleen Fondessy made a layup with two seconds left in the game.

During the 17-2 run, Katlyn Spahar made a pair of free throws, giving JCU a 57-56 lead with 2:45 remaining in the game.

Madi Steiner was able to  find Kahrin Spear for the three point dagger with 1:48 left. With the victory JCU improves to 4-8, (2-4 OAC). The Crusaders drop to 5-8, (1-5 OAC) on the season.

John Carroll will be in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on Monday, Jan. 9, facing off against Kenyon College at 3:00 p.m.
