The John Carroll women's soccer team celebrated its senior day weeks ago, but it felt like another incarnation of a senior day Saturday afternoon at Don Shula Stadium.
All three seniors, in their final regular season match at home, played huge parts in a 2-1 victory against the visiting Crusaders of Capital University.
The Blue Streaks, having lost their last two games, started off the game quickly. Within the first three minutes, a perfectly placed corner kick by sophomore
Jaclyn Audino resulted in a header goal by senior
Katie O'Donnell.
This would not be the only opportunity O'Donnell would get.
John Carroll took advantage of the quick lead. Almost identical to the previous goal, senior
Justina Fortson assisted O'Donnell as she netted her second goal for the day, effectively making the score 2-0.
The Blue Streaks continued to dominate on both sides of the ball. A strong defensive effort by the likes of
Bailey Fischer,
Lexie Keller, and
Sydney Scello prevented the Crusaders from denting the scoreboard. The score remained 2-0 at the half.
As the second half started, the Crusaders became more aggressive and started getting scoring chances. It took until the final ten minutes for Capital to get a shot past
Rhianna Guarnera as Jayde Hoffmann headed one past Guarnera on a Bridget Mallin corner at the 82:46 mark, making the score 2-1.
With a one goal deficit, multiple efforts by
Bailey Fischer and
Rachel Braunegg to extend the lead were unsuccessful, but solid defense by John Carroll within the last few minutes secured the Blue Streak victory.
Thanks to the win, John Carroll moves to 8-5-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the OAC. The win keeps the Blue Streaks tied with Mount Union and Baldwin Wallace for third place in the conference, two points behind second place Capital. The Crusaders fall to 7-7-1 overall and 5-2 in the OAC.
John Carroll will travel to Alliance, Ohio to battle the Purple Raiders of Mount Union on Tuesday, October 24, at 7:30 P.M. Â Â Â
