Senior Day A Joyful One For Blue Streaks In Capturing Elusive Home Win

With a total of 60 wins over four seasons, 17 of which came in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, the John Carroll senior group of Julianne McGervey, Sydney Slater, Kayla Musso, and Kayla Major looked to add one more tally in the win column to already successful careers.

Problem was, 2017 was proving to be difficult to add a home win to that tally.

Standing in their way would be the Capital Crusaders, who had an identical conference record to the Blue Streaks. With the two teams tied for eighth place, and only eight teams qualifying for the postseason tournament, the match would be vital for postseason hopes for both squads.

The home crowd who came out to see the JCU seniors in their final home match would not be disappointed as the Blue Streaks captured the match in three sets.

The first set would start out as expected, with both teams battling back and forth, neither gaining too much of an advantage. With the score tied at 13, John Carroll would summon some of that senior spirit and go on a 12-4 run, and come out with the 25-17 victory. Slater led the way for the home team in the first set with three kills.

In the second set, Capital would get out to a 4-1 lead, which John Carroll would quickly erase. The Blue Streaks managed to gain the 5-4 lead, and from there the teams would once again go back and forth with scores, neither gaining more than a point or two over the other. However, similar to the first set, JCU would go on a run to win the set. A 9-2 run gave the Blue Streaks a 19-12 advantage, and they would end up taking the second set 25-21 behind six kills from Julianne McGervey and Kayla Major.

The third set would be so similar to the other two that the script pretty much wrote itself. The two teams would compete early, and would find themselves in a tight 18-15 match. John Carroll would go on a 7-2 run and win the third set 25-17.

Slater, Major, and McGervey combined for a total of 18 kills in the match, and Musso contributed 17 digs and two service aces.

With John Carroll winning the match, its record improves to 6-22 overall and 2-5 in the OAC, while Capital falls to 9-18 overall and 1-6 in the OAC. John Carroll's next match takes place on Tuesday, October 24th, as the Blue Streaks will travel to Alliance and take on the University of Mount Union.
