Despite a strong effort by the Blue Streaks, the John Carroll volleyball season came to an end with a 3-0 loss to top-seeded Otterbein in the quarterfinal round of the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament.
In enemy territory, the Streaks gave their all in a contest that seemed at long odds from the start.
After beginning the first set down 5-1, the squad battled back to be tied at 5, but the first set upset attempt was quickly spoiled by an 11-0 run from the Cardinals, putting the frame out of reach. Otterbein took the first set, 25-13.
The second set was more of the same, as Otterbein took the win, 25-18. Finally, in the third and deciding set, John Carroll fell 26-15, thereby ending their 2017 season campaign.
Aside from a tough regular and postseason, there is much to be hopeful for in the years to come.
Caitlin Cianciolo will be returning for her final year as a Blue Streak. She is just 17 digs away from reaching four digits in the category and she will look to lead the team into a strong 2018 season.
In addition, several younger and first year players made major contributions to the Blue Streaks roster. Most notably, freshmen
Sarah Calabrese and
Shannon Atwell demonstrated their abilities to be future leaders and key assets in years to come. Atwell is already ranked 9th in assists (655) for John Carroll while Calabrese just broke the 300-kill milestone with her eight kills in the match.
The senior class played its final match.
Kayla Major had three kills and two blocks to finish her career with 196 kills and 32 blocks in 149 sets (59 matches).
Julianne McGervey had two kills to end her career with 649 kills in 292 games (97 matches). Her kills total is 20th all-time at John Carroll.
