1997 JCU Football Team Honored, Fletcher Jersey Number Retired This Saturday

The final home football game at John Carroll University for the 2017 campaign will have plenty of attractions attached to an already attractive match-up.

The number two ranked Purple Raiders of Mount Union (9-0, 8-0 OAC) pay a visit to Don Shula Stadium to face the host Blue Streaks of John Carroll University (6-3, 6-2 OAC) for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, November 11. Although not a true regular season championship game like it has been the past four seasons (three won by Mount Union, one by John Carroll), it is a first place vs. second place battle nevertheless.

Note: There will be no pre-sale tickets for this game. All tickets will be sold on site at Shula Stadium. Gates open at 12 noon on Saturday, November 11.

In addition to the game, John Carroll will salute "Military Appreciation Day" on the day the nation celebrates Veterans Day.

At halftime, the 1997 John Carroll football team -- the first in program history to win an NCAA Division III postseason contest -- will be honored on the 20th anniversary of their achievement. Over 50 members of that team are expected to be in attendance.

Additionally, London Fletcher, who was a senior captain on that team, will have his jersey number retired. A two-time All-American, Fletcher wore #3 as a Blue Streak, finishing his senior year with a school record 202 tackles and was named the 1997 Football Gazette Division III Linebacker of the Year.

After his collegiate carer was over, Fletcher made a name for himself in the NFL, completing 16 seasons in the league before retiring at the end of the 2013 season. Fletcher was a four-time Pro Bowl selection in his NFL career, and was the leading tackler for the Super Bowl XXXIV champion St. Louis Rams.

The game will covered live by live video, live stats and by the John Carroll campus radio station, WJCU-FM (88.7 in the Cleveland area).
