Sometimes the numbers lie. Sometimes the numbers are spot on.
The case that Ohio Northern's defense is among the best in the nation was strengthened Saturday afternoon, as John Carroll was held to a season low for offensive production in a 75-37 loss.
ONU, which came into the game ranked 15th in the nation by d3hoops.com, was also statistically ranked 15th in all of Division III in points allowed (47.9), and held its first eight opponents to a combined field goal percentage of .297 for the season -- fifth best in the nation.
John Carroll simply could not muster points as the Polar Bears held the Blue Streaks to 15-54 (.278) from the field, and 3-19 (.158) from three point range. This was only the second time in
Kelly Morrone's five seasons that the Blue Streaks were held to under 40 points in a game.
Chelbi Graham was the lone Blue Streak in double figures, going 5-10 from the field for her ten points.
Nicole Heffington added eight, and
Brielle Zbydniewski scored six off the bench.
JCU falls to 2-6 overall and 0-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Ohio Northern won its eighth consecutive game and is now 8-1 overall and 4-0 in league play.
The Blue Streaks host Bluffton -- the only team to beat ONU this season (67-66 in the opener) -- at the DeCarlo Varsity Center on Tuesday, December 19, at 5:30 p.m.
