Blue Streaks Storm Back To Top Heidelberg on Senior Night

There is no feeling sweeter than winning on Senior Day. On Wednesday night, the John Carroll women's basketball team put together a Senior Day to remember for Katlyn Spahar.

Spahar scored 21 points, including a pair of important free throws, as John Carroll roared back to top Heidelberg University, 65-61, at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

Before the game, Spahar was honored as part of Senior Day Festivities. The senior is the second leading scorer in program history

Spahar added nine rebounds and four assists in her final game on the DeCarlo Center hardwood. She also shot a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe.

John Carroll also moves one step closer to the OAC postseason, needing a win on the road at Capital on Saturday.

JCU started the game with a layup by Shmoo Pryor within the first 15 seconds of the game. Heidelberg would go on a 10-0 run, finishing up the quarter leading John Carroll 24-13. The second quarter started to pick up for the Blue Streaks. They prevented the Berg from scoring in the first three minutes, ultimately outscoring Heidelberg 11-7. JCU would trail by seven points (31-24) heading into the second half.

Chelbi Graham led all scorers at the half with nine points and three rebounds, followed by Spahar with eight points and six rebounds. Heidelberg's Theresa Jackson had eight points and seven rebounds.

After shooting 68.8 percent in the first ten minutes, Heidelberg hit just three shots from the floor in the second quarter. The Berg connected at a 15.8 percent clip in the period.

Both teams each had three players in double digits. Along with Spahar, John Carroll's Shmoo Pryor and Chelbi Graham contributed 14 points a piece. Heidelberg's Theresa Jackson recorded a double-double (21 points, 12 rebounds), while Cassidy Frank and Maggie Davault scored 12 points and 10 points, respectively.

John Carroll rallied to tie the game at 33 just three minutes into the third quarter. After Spahar was fouled on a turnaround jumper, the Blue Streaks took the lead on two free throws with 5:34 left. Cassidy Frank drilled a three-pointer on the next possession, taking a 36-35 lead.

Heading into the fourth, Heidelberg trailed 45-42. The lead would go back-and-forth for the rest of regulation time. The Blue Streaks would go on an 8-0 run, only for the Berg to rally. With 45 seconds remaining on the clock, John Carroll was up by three (61-58). A foul by JCU sent Maggie Davault to the line, going 1-for-2 with 17 seconds left on the clock. Within the final seconds, Spahar was fouled twice and made all four free throws to clinch the victory.

The Blue Streaks improve to 7-17 overall and 5-12 in the OAC. The Berg falls to 8-16 overall and 5-12 in the OAC. John Carroll will compete in their final regular season matchup on Saturday, with tip-off at 3:00 p.m.
