Blue Streaks Celebrate Mike Moran, Come Up Just Short On Senior Day

John Carroll University men's basketball fell in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon, as Capital University came away with a 76-75 win in Coach Mike Moran's final regular season home game at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

The Blue Streaks drop to 17-7 overall and 14-4 in conference play. Capital improves to 13-12 and 8-10 in the OAC. John Carroll will host a quarterfinal round matchup in the OAC Tournament on Tuesday evening. Official seeding will be announced soon.

Before the game, the six seniors on the JCU roster were acknowledged for their achievements over four years. Head coach Mike Moran was honored for his 25 years of service to JCU basketball, as the Department of Athletics announced that the hardwood at the DeCarlo Center would be named "Mike Moran Court."

David Linane, Jr. scored 21 points and added five rebounds. Simon Kucharewicz totaled nine points and seven boards. John Cirillo had 16 points and five rebounds.
Capital took an early lead, but JCU battled back. As a whole at the free throw line, John Carroll shot just 55.2 percent. The Blue Streaks totaled 17 turnovers.

Capital took advantage. Sophomore guard Austin Schreck shot 10-11 from the field for 24 points with four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Capital would rip off 13 straight points to grab a 15-4 advantage early. Over the next nine minutes, the Blue Streaks would take control of the game by going on a 35-13 run and hold a 39-28 advantage. Capital would come crawling back and would finish the half on a 7-0 spurt to control a halftime lead of 47-42.

The Crusaders shot 7-of-9 from three-point range in the first half, and from the floor shot 70.9 percent. John Carroll shot 48 percent from the floor, but trailed by five at the break.

The second half momentum stayed in Capital's favor. The largest sequence of the game happened with 1:32 left in regulation and a 74-72 Capital lead. David Linane Jr. had the ball on the left wing, received a screen from Simon Kucharewicz and knocked down a three with a hand in his face to give JCU a 75-74 lead.

The Crusaders would call on Schreck, and he answered. Guard Will Hannah was scrambling with the shot clock winding down and jumped in the air to deliver a pass to a cutting Schreck. The sophomore laid the ball up and in for the lead. That would be enough for the Crusaders.

Up next is a berth in the OAC Tournament, with a Tuesday home game guaranteed. The Blue Streaks, if seeded #2, would have a potential second home game if they win Tuesday.
