Early Lead Does Not Hold As Blue Streaks Fall By Single Point

A brisk February night could not help freeze the red-hot visitors.

On the DeCarlo Center wrestling mat, the Heidelberg University Student Princes (10-3, 4-0 OAC) topped the John Carroll University Blue Streaks (6-7, 0-4 OAC) on Friday evening in University Heights, Ohio, by a narrow margin final score of 19-18.

The Blue Streaks took four of 10 matches from Heidelberg, but the Student Princes made the most of five decisions and one major decision and had the final say as they claimed their fourth Ohio Athletic Conference dual victory of the season.

Three of the closest matches were decided, fittingly enough, by a single point, and all went the way of the Berg.

The Student Princes took the two opening bouts before Sal Corrao (141) won by tech fall, 20-4, to give JCU their first team points of the evening. Corrao is now 4-0 in OAC duals this season.

Sophomore Jarrad Lasko continued the momentum for the Blue Streaks at 149 pounds, earning a win by decision, 4-2. Lasko, who now has 25 wins on the season, is the reigning OAC Wrestler of the Week is still perfect against conference opponents (4-0). His opponent, Dallas O'Green, entered the match with a 24-2 record.

Blake Dixon (157) then earned his first conference dual victory of the season, beating Noah Messerall of Heidelberg by fall in the third period to give JCU a 14-6 team lead. Dixon earned his 50th career win with the pin.

Freshman Danny Novak, wrestling up a weight class at 165, earned his second conference win of the year by major decision, 13-4.

JCU led 18-6 with four matches remaining, but could not get the one win needed to salt the match away.

The Student Princes won the final four matches of the evening to remain undefeated against OAC opponents this season. The closest of the four was at 197, where Gage Finnegan used a reversal at the start of the third to create just enough separation to outlast Mason Litz, 7-6.
