The John Carroll University women's basketball team nearly erased a double-digit deficit late in Wednesday's contest, but fell to Baldwin Wallace University, 71-63, at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
JCU (6-16, 4-11 OAC) trailed by as many as 14 in the fourth quarter, but rallied to outscore BW (18-4, 11-4 OAC) 19-13 in the final ten minutes. JCU cut the lead to as little as four in the closing minutes.Â
Katlyn Spahar had 18 points and five rebounds for JCU, with
Shmoo Pryor contributing 13 points of her own. Off the bench,
Kahrin Spear scored seven.
Chelbi Graham had eight points and nine boards.
The Yellow Jackets came out strong during the first quarter, with Sydney Clark sinking a jumper within the first minute.
Shmoo Pryor quickly responded with a layup. Baldwin Wallace pulled away, creating a 10-point deficit. The Blue and Gold eventually decreased the deficit to six points.
Shmoo Pryor aided the team by scoring seven points in the first, with the quarter ending at 19-13 in favor of Baldwin Wallace.
The second quarter was a different story. The Blue Streaks prevented the Yellow Jackets from scoring within the first 5 minutes of the quarter. In doing so, John Carroll put on the pressure and turned the competition into a one point game, 19-18. At the half, BW led by three following another late run by JCU.
Baldwin Wallace had three players in double digits: MacKenzie Colombo with 23, Hannah Fecht with 13, and Sydney Clark with 12. Â
The third quarter was the difference maker. Baldwin Wallace started pulling away, finishing up the quarter leading 56-44.
Baldwin Wallace went on a 14-7 run and outscored John Carroll 28-19 for the quarter.
John Carroll began to rally in the fourth, but was unable to take the lead. JCU closed the score to just four points, but free throws sealed the game for Baldwin Wallace.
The Blue Streaks will travel to Ada, Ohio to take on the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern University Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
