Baseball Earns Saturday Split With Win In Game One

John Carroll baseball split a Saturday doubleheader with Transylvania, taking game one at Marquard Field in Lexington, Ky. The Blue Streaks (5-8) battled late in game two before falling to Transylvania (5-8), 9-7.

Game One - John Carroll 6, Transylvania 5

A three-run seventh inning made the difference and the bullpen held on late as John Carroll took the game by a final score of 6-5.

Dominic Mittiga went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a double. Patrick Scholla also had two hits in four trips to the plate. Monroe Donnelly cracked his third home run of the season.

Steven Virost (W, 2-1) pitched 2.1 innings after Drew Vargo started and went 5.2 innings. Virost struck out two and gave up two runs on five hits. Bryce Crader (L, 0-3) gave up two runs and recorded one out out of the bullpen for Transylvania.

Scholla started the scoring with an RBI single in the second. In the third, Mittiga doubled to score Penman and give JCU a 2-1 lead. In the fifth, Monroe Donnelly blasted a shot to left center field for his third long ball. Transylvania tied the game at three with a run in the fifth and sixth innings.

In the seventh, Mittiga plated two on a single to third base and an error. Scholla drove home another to cap the three-run inning. Transylvania scored two more runs, but Mark Materise tossed a one-two-three ninth for his second save.

Game Two - Transylvania 9, John Carroll 7

John Carroll scored first, but Transylvania rode a four-run fifth to victory.

Monroe Donnelly had two RBI on 1-for-3 at the dish, homering and walking twice. Joe Charpentier tripled, and eight Blue Streaks recorded a hit on the day. Fred Moore falls to 1-3 on the year, as the freshman pitched 4.2 innings and gave up eight runs.

Jared Williams drove in three runs from the leadoff spot for Transylvania, and Braden Johnson (W, 2-1) got the win despite allowing six runs.

Donnelly hit his second home run of the day and fourth of the campaign in the first inning, hitting a two-run shot to left center. Transylvania scored four straight runs before back-to-back RBI singles by Scholla and Aaron Zawadski in the fourth.

Transylvania scored five runs over two innings, and JCU's bats went to work late. Mittiga doubled to center to score Matthew Donnelly in the seventh, followed by a Nathan Reich punched ball through the left side for a second run.

The last JCU run came in the eighth when Matthew Donnelly singled to right, plating Patrick Keohane. JCU went in order in the ninth.

The Blue and Gold are back in action Sunday at noon in Lexington before traveling to Granville, Ohio to play Denison on Thursday.
