Tenth Inning Explosion Powers Baseball Past Pitt-Bradford

A tremendous effort in the tenth inning pushed the John Carroll University baseball team to a 14-7 victory against Pitt-Bradford in Fort Myers, Florida.

John Carroll trailed 7-5 late in the game, but ripped off nine unanswered, including seven in the tenth inning. Steven Virost (1-1) earned the win after locking down the Panthers, allowing two hits and one walk in five innings of relief.

Carter Semancik started the game, giving up two earned runs and exiting with the game at 7-5. Cameron Mayle threw 1.1 innings, striking out one.

Monroe Donnelly went 3-for-5 at the plate; the junior recorded two RBI, one double and two triples. Derek Penman went 2-for-5, adding four RBI. Dominic Mittiga went 1-for-3 and had three RBI.

It was a slow start for John Carroll, as Pitt-Bradford quickly scored four runs. Small ball in the second inning gave JCU two runs back, which Pitt-Bradford answered in the second to extend the lead to 5-2.

John Carroll chipped away, tying the game at 5 on Charpentier and Mittiga RBI singles in the third. Pitt-Bradford regained the advantage in the fourth on two errors.

A towering seventh inning triple by Monroe Donnelly would tie the game at 7 and eventually force extra innings. Virost did not allow a base hot from the sixth to ninth innings, setting the table for the massive rally in the next frame.

In the tenth inning, Matthew Donnelly punched a ball through the right side of the infield, scoring Monroe Donnelly and giving JCU the lead. Mittiga's sacrifice bunt attempt scored Charpentier in the next at-bat. The lead was extended to three runs, when an error at third base sent Matthew Donnelly home.

Penman busted the game wide open with a shot into left that cleared the bases. His three RBI on the triple made it a 13-7 game. Monroe Donnelly would then drive a ball to the base of the wall in left field to add the final run.

With the victory, John Carroll moves to 3-4 on the season. Pitt-Bradford falls to 1-5. The Blue Streaks will play Thursday, Mar. 9 against Moravian College. First pitch at 2:00 p.m.
