John Carroll softball won their fourth and fifth consecutive games on Tuesday afternoon, as the Blue Streaks swept Mount Union at Bracken Field.
John Carroll is now 6-4 in the OAC, good for third place after starting 0-3 in conference play. JCU has now won seven straight against UMU; this marks a series best.
Game One – John Carroll 4, Mount Union 1
AnnMarie Kirchner pitched a gem in game one, giving up one run on five hits and striking out five. Kirchner improved to 5-3 on the year with the complete game victory.
Carly Simecek was 1-for-2 with three RBI.
Hannah Mizener went 2-for-3 with a double, scoring twice.
Simecek crushed a two-run home run in the first inning; the approximately 250-foot blast was the 22nd of her career. The senior is now six home runs away from setting the program record.
Mount Union answered back with a run in the second. After a leadoff double, a pair of singles plated one run. A walk and fielder's choice loaded the bases following a popout. Simecek fielded a grounder and fired it home for the second out. She snared a pop-up in the next at-bat to end the inning and preserve Kirchner's line.
Maggie Gannon ended the top of the fourth with a laser throw to second that caught Cox stealing by 10 feet. After loading the bases in the third, Kirchner sat down 15 of the next 16 batters, striking out five.
Simecek delivered once more in the fifth inning on a deep sacrifice fly that scored a run. After a pair of walks to start the sixth inning, Eder singled to left center, scoring Navratil.
Game Two - John Carroll 6, Mount Union 1
John Carroll notched a six-run sixth for the second straight day, topping Mount Union 6-1.
Kelly Geringer, with the win, is now 4-2 for the season. Mount Union's Reusser moves to 8-7. Mizener was 3-for-4 in game two, driving in one run.
Jennie Broski and
Quinn Sobieszczanski were 1-for-3 with RBI hits.
Both pitchers controlled the game early on. Geringer allowed runners to reach scoring position in the first and third innings, but closed the door on the Purple Raiders preventing them from scoring. The game remained scoreless throughout the first 3 innings.
The Blue Streaks put two runners on in the fourth inning with two outs, but were unable to send the lead runner home. A hit and run on a bunt with two runners in scoring position scored the game's first run. Hume's bunt right in front of the plate sent Tull home for a 1-0 UMU lead.
Mount Union threatened in the sixth with a leadoff walk, but
Carly Simecek attacked an attempted bunt, keeping the Mount Union from adding a run.
A single by Simecek in the bottom of the sixth started off the momentum for the Blue Streaks. A SAC bunt by
Lindsay McKnight transformed into a triple as Lehman had a throwing error to first base. Simecek scored, tying the game at one. Broski poked one out to center field, sending McKnight home and recorded an RBI. The Blue Streaks effectively took the lead in the bottom of the sixth.
With one out,
Elizabeth Fraas would single and Broski would head for home. The Blue Streaks would go through the batting order and score six runs in the sixth inning.
The Blue Streaks will travel to Meadville, PA to take on the Gators of Allegheny College in a double header Wednesday, Apr. 12. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
