Blue Streaks Swept in Alliance By Purple Raiders

John Carroll University dropped a two game set with Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Mount Union, during double header action on Wednesday, April 12.

The Blue Streaks lost game one, 5-4, and dropped the second game, 12-5, dropping the Blue Streaks to 10-15 on the year with a 3-5 mark in the OAC.

John Carroll's next action will come in the package of two double headers against Otterbein University and Heidelberg University. The first game of the double header with Otterbein will mark the 1,500th game in program history on Friday, April 14.

Game One – Mount Union 5, John Carroll 4

Mount Union took away the John Carroll lead twice in the final two innings, topping JCU in walk-off fashion, 5-4.

Christian Stanziano hit an RBI triple in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win.

Fred Moore turned in his second consecutive quality start, tossing seven innings of five-hit ball, allowing two runs. Aaron Zawadski was 2-for-3 at the plate for John Carroll. Monroe Donnelly, Patrick Keohane, and Mike Raschilla each drove in a run. Mark Materise was the losing pitcher, allowing three runs in two innings.

Mount Union scored in the first, when a Joey Keleman single scored Nick Piotrowski. After giving up a run on two hits in the first, Moore shut down the Purple Raiders in the next five innings. He retired six in a row before allowing a single, then set down seven more.

John Carroll scored to level the game in the fourth when Raschilla punched a single to left field that scored Dominic Mittiga. In the next inning, Patrick Keohane tripled to center field to score the go-ahead run. Monroe Donnelly reached on an error by the shortstop, but did earn a RBI on the play.

Moore walked a pair in the sixth before inducing a flyout to left field to end the inning. In the seventh, he surrendered a run, but escaped with little damage to the lead.

Mark Materise entered in the eighth, and Mount Union scored on a Piotrowski single up the middle.

JCU snatched the lead back following a pair of errors that allowed Frank Spinelli to score on a sacrifice bunt. The Blue Streaks loaded the bases with one out, but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning with a 4-3 lead.

Mount Union scored two in the bottom of the ninth to win.

Game Two – Mount Union 12, John Carroll 5

Mount Union finished the day by scoring eight of their 12 runs in the bottom of the sixth, securing both wins in a Wednesday Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Cameron Mayle was the starting pitcher in game two for JCU, who finished the day with 4.1 innings pitched and three strikeouts. Mount Union's Billy Goodall finished game two with three hits, including a double, and three RBIs on five plate appearances.

Pitchers James Molnar and Steve Virost each pitched a full inning, with neither of the two giving up a hit.
