Proof that a team can play 89 solid minutes and pay for a momentary lapse was never more evident than John Carroll's 2-1 loss to open the 2017 campaign Friday at Adrian College.
JCU held the edge in shots, shots on goal and corner kicks, but it was a 20-second letdown that proved fatal.
The Blue Streaks got on the board first in the opening period asÂ
Bailey Fischer put a shot low and right in the 23rd minute to give JCU an early 1-0 advantage.
A corner kick that bounded in the box gave Adrian the opening to tie the match, and Mackenzie Wilcox finished the play to knot the score at 1-1 at the 30:10 mark.Â
Where the game was won happened after the restart.
23 seconds after the restart. A quick counter strike left Wilcox in position to put a sliding kick into the back of the net to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
Despite a 5-1 shot advantage in the second half, the Blue Streaks could not find the equalizer and dropped its ninth consecutive season opener. John Carroll's last win to open a season was a 1-0 victory over Allegheny in 2008.
