There was plenty of promise in the DeCarlo Varsity Center early on Tuesday night as the John Carroll volleyball team looked to pick up its inaugural home win of 2017.
After a solid first set victory, promise seemed ready to be realized.
It was a cruel night after that for the Blue Streaks, who found three different ways to drop sets in what became a 3-1 loss to non-conference rival College of Wooster.
The Blue Streaks and Fighting Scots went back and forth in the opening frame, but it was a late burst by the home squad that brought home a 25-22 win. Trailing 16-14, JCU won 11 of the last 17 points, and finished the set with a .295 hitting percentage.
Sarah Calabrese had six of JCU's 17 kills.
John Carroll continued its strong play to open the second game, and at one point held a 13-10 lead. Out of nowhere, Wooster rattled off seven consecutive points on the strong serving of Ksenia Klue and never looked back to pick up a 25-19 triumph.
The third set started as dreadful as could be for the Blue Streaks as Wooster racked up the first nine points. Yet miraculously, with the serving of
Kayla Musso and
Nicole Pilewski setting the pace, John Carroll climbed out of an 11-2 hole and took a 14-13 lead midway through the stanza.
A tussle ensued as the two teams traded mini runs and never led by more than two points down the stretch. When Calabrese put down a kill to give JCU a 23-22 advantage, the Blue Streaks incredibly stood two points away from one of the all-time classic rallies. But Wooster claimed the final three points, the last on a Klue blast into the deep right corner, that sealed the game three win.
The fourth game saw JCU struggle mightily as Wooster had its best hitting game of the night. The Fighting Scots never trailed and hit .333 to roll to a 25-17 victory and take the match.
Klue led Wooster (6-4) with 16 kills, while Taylor Matthews had 37 assists. Gabrielle Basinski led the defensive effort with 23 digs.
On the John Carroll (2-7) side, Calabrese led all players with 20 kills, while
Julianne McGervey added 13 as
Maddie Christopher (29) and
Shannon Atwell (19) were the primary setters.
Caitlin Cianciolo tallied 21 digs.
Thommie Jackson,
Lexie DeMatteis, Calabrese and McGervey were part of an effort that produced four team blocks
